‘IECC’s move is political, sentimental and illegal one made in rush’

06/12/2018

KABUL (SW) – The Independent Election Commission has pronounced the move by the complaint commission in regard to vote cast in Kabul as a political, sentimental and illegal one made in rush.

This comes hours after the Independent Election Complaint Commission declared all votes cast for the Wolesi Jirga in Kabul as void based on alleged fraud and electoral irregularities.

Abdulbadi Sayad, IEC chairman, told a press conference that the announcement made by the IECC has no legal grounds, and is based on political motivations. The IEC officials said they got to know about the IECC’s move through media, and the complaint commission did not coordinate with them.

The IEC officials further made it clear appointment or termination of electoral commission officials lies within its jurisdiction, not the IECC’s.

They charged the IECC officials always strived to sabotage the national process of elections, and with today’s move, they proved this. They said the excuse of unjust polls cannot be used to declare the votes as void.

The IEC announced the counting and recounting of votes is undergoing, and would continue as normal.
