KABUL (SW) – A well-placed source has informed Salam Watandar the Independent Election Commission is set to hold presidential elections on April 20, next year.
The IEC is likely to announce the date on Wednesday. Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy head for media affairs at the IEC, told Salam Watandar the date has been finalized after consultations with the civil society organizations, political parties and electoral watchdogs.
Criticis, however, continue to remain skeptical over the prospect of inclusive, timely and transparent elections for the parliament, district councils and the presidency.
Yosuf Rasheed, head of the Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan, said in this regard that the IEC has set this date under pressure from the government. He vowed the IEC is not well-prepared to hold the elections, and would face many troubles.
