TALOQAN (SW): Thousands of war-weary civilians from Kunduz have taken refuge in neighboring Takhar province as violence continues to threat everyday life in this northern province.
Authorities in Takhar have warned of a crisis like situation if no immediate measures are put in place to help the civilians fleeing violence in Kunduz. Most of these Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have taken refuge in various parts of Taloqan, provincial capital of Takhar. Yaseen Zia, the provincial governor told Salam Watandar that they lack the resources to facilitate the mounting number of IDPs. He highlighted that no aid agency or government institution have come for the rescue of these needy people.
The local community, with some help by the provincial government has provided the frightened IDPs with some basic aid. “My message and appeal to the central government and the aid agencies is to provide aid for these needy people as soon as possible”, he stressed. People in Takhar have also generously donated blood to those who got injured in the fighting in Kudnuz.
The IDPs told Salam Watandar they fled Kunduz literally empty handed. They appealed the government to provide them with health facilities, food, medicine and shelter. “I left my home in a rush and just pick my burka [veil] to escape the fighting”, an elderly woman said, adding that she paid AFN 4000 to reach Taleqan. “Our home was hit by a rocket, we are a family of 20 people, and the first one to escape the fighting”, another IDP said.
These people have settled down in open grounds, and are exposed to all sorts of diseases.
