KABUL (SW) – The funeral prayers for iconic poet and politician, Academician Sulaiman Layeq were offered here on Tuesday.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressed his condolences to his family and expressed sorrow over his death, calling it a great loss for the country. Many officials, writers, politicians and the general public have also lamented the death of Layeq who succumbed to injuries he sustained following a suicide attack in Kabul.
He was taken to Germany for treatment where he lost the battle for life at the age of 90.
Born in Sharana, the capital of Paktika province, in 1930, Layeq completed his primary education in Paghman and higher education at the Kabul University's Faculty of Sharia and Literature.
He was among the founders of the People's Democratic Party after joining the left-wing political movement in his youth. Later, he served as cabinet minister before fleeing first to Pakistan and then to Germany during the civil war.
