Hundreds of teachers on strike in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (SW): Hundreds of teachers in Logar province have gone on strike against delay in payment of their salaries for the past two months.

The protesting teachers charged the provincial directorate of education for deliberately delaying payment of their salaries on the pretext of different excuses. Noor Rehman Rehmani, one of the teachers, told Salam Watandar that up to 1000 teachers have boycotted attending classes in the Mohammad Agha district alone in protest. “The payment of salaries are always delayed, when we shared our problems with the provincial governor he referred us to the district governor, the district governor then referred us to the director for education, bu the issue never got resolved”, he said. Rehmani said the teachers would continue with their strike as long as their demands are not met.

Khwaja Noorul Haq, a teacher at the Dahno School in Mohammad Agha, informed he has closed down the school, and would not re-open until the salary issue is not resolved.

Commenting on the situation, Mohammad Akbar, director for education in the province, has acknowledged that the issue exists. He, however, vowed to resolve the problem sooner than later. He blamed technical issues for the delay in payment of salaries, and promised to fix it soon.

Logar has around 264 schools where up to 140, 000 children are enrolled.
