JALALABAD (SW): At least 405 out of the 903 public schools in Nangarhar province lack proper infrastructure, clean drinking water and other facilities, officials said on Monday.

Syed Esa Sadat, interim head of Nangarhar Education Directorate, told a gathering in Jalalabad city that the Ministry of Education has been approached for budget in this regard, but there has been no positive response yet.

He said ragging violence and insecurity have led to the closure of 12 schools, but efforts are underway to ensure re-opening of these schools through mediation of the local elders. The interim head of Nangarhar Education Directorate mentioned in some districts the Taliban are pushing for additional religious subjects.

About the distribution of books, Syed Esa Sadat said up to 600,000 books have been distributed in the provincial capital and 22 districts. He, however, expressed concerns over lack of books for class 7,8 and 9.
