MAIDAN CITY (SW): Scores of Taliban rebels have mounted an overnight attack on Jalrez district in central Maidan Wardak province neighboring the capital Kabul.
The fighting was reportedly underway on Friday as well as the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) got the backing of additional troops from the provincial capital Maidan City to repulse the attack. The heavily-equipped militants were said to be in hundreds.
Naqeebullah Haidari, Jalrez’s district chief told Salam Watandar that the ANSF have tactically vacated one security check post and have killed at least 10 rebels. He confirmed that fighting was still underway. The district chief noted that the attackers came from Maidan Wardak province, and neighboring Zabul and Ghazni provinces in a bid to overrun the Jalrez district.
This comes days after two suicide bombers hit a convoy of Afghan National Police (ANP) cadets and officers that was travelling form Maidan Wardak province to the capital Kabul. The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has confirmed that as many as 32 policemen died in the attack. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has directed an inquiry into the vulnerable mode of ANP’s transportation.
