LASHKARGAH (SW) – Hundreds of contract teachers in Helmand province took to the street against non-payment of salaries.
They warned if these 1170 teachers are not paid their outstanding dues for the past one year, they would not conduct forthcoming examinations in schools.
Two such protesting teachers, Shah Wali Zeyarmal and Abdul Qadeer Khan, told Salam Watandar they have not been paid salaries for the past twelve months. The protesting teachers said they have shared their concerns with the directorate for education here, but to no avail. They demanded the Ministry of Education to look into this matter seriously.
They said the students have struggled together with them during this time, and if the matter is not resolved properly they would miss their yearly examinations.
When contacted, head of the directorate for education, Mohammad Dawood Shah Safari, acknowledged the non-payment of salaries to the contract teachers. He vowed the matter would soo0n be resolved with support from the MoE. He expressed fear the continuation of this crisis would pose risk to the future of some 47,000 students here.
He added work is also underway to distribute residential plots among teachers.
