MAIMANA (SW): A human catastrophe is feared to emerge in Faryab province as its Kohistan district remains under the Taliban’s siege for three months now.
A number of residents told Salam Watandar that they are unable to access the provincial capital Maimana even for the supplies of basic needs of life. The prices of food items in Kohistan have skyrocketed. They warned that if no immediate measures are put in place to end this siege, the locals would have to bear with six months of harsh winter without food and other supplies.
Saa’dat, a commander of the Afghan Local Police (ALP), in the area told Salam Watandar that the Taliban took the province under siege three months ago after sustaining heavy casualties in failed attempt to overrun the district. He added that if the government forces are unable to break this siege, they should at least cut the supply line of the Taliban as well.
Meanwhile, Abdul Nabi Elham, the police chief in Faryab, has vowed that soon a clean-up operation would be launched to break the Taliban’s siege of Kohistan. He added that the Taliban would not be allowed to overrun the district by denying the locals access to food and other supplies.
