Huddersfield stuns Manchester United in a thriller

22/10/2017

KABUL (SW): Huddersfield beat Manchester United for the first time since 1952 to end the unbeaten start to the Premier League season by Jose Mourinho's side.

Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre scored in the first half before substitute Marcus Rashford pulled one back for United. Huddersfield came into the game without a league win since August and without a league goal since Sep. 16, while United had kept seven clean sheets in their first eight games. An eighth would have been a top-flight record, but two mistakes, one from Juan Mata and another from Victor Lindelof, ruined any chance of that, espn reported.

According to the guardian, the most impressive part of Huddersfield’s performance was that they never allowed anxiety to creep in. They refused to let United settle and for long spells it was remarkable how comfortable they looked.

Rashford’s goal, a far-post header from Romelu Lukaku’s cross, did change the complexion and the home side also had to contend with four minutes of stoppage-time. Those were the moments, however, when Huddersfield’s players showed a spirit of togetherness that will be crucial in the coming months.

Mooy was the game’s outstanding performer but there were half a dozen of his team-mates, most notably Ince and Christopher Schindler, who pushed him close, whereas it was difficult to think of a single player in red who wore the colours with distinction. Rashford, one of two half-time substitutes, did at least bring something new, but that was about it. Nemanja Matic had his worst game for United by some distance and Anthony Martial, like Mata, was removed at the interval

Jose Mourinho has cited a number of reasons for Manchester United’s shock defeat to Huddersfield, even bringing up how ‘incredibly’ windy it was during Saturday’s match. Mourinho was full of praise for Huddersfield afterwards and admitted his own side failed to match the Terriers in a number of areas – not least dealing with the windy conditions produced by Storm Brian. ‘When the best team wins, there is nothing to say,’ Mourinho told Sky Sports afterwards.
