KABUL (SW) – The proposed conference on peace in Afghanistan was set to be held in Jeddah on January 04, but this moot did not took place.
The High Peace Council announced here on Sunday the host Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other participating countries have not finalized the date for the conference.
Syed Ehsani Tahiri, spokesman for the HPC, told a presser in this connection that though the final date for this proposed conference has not been announced, the Afghan government should only attend it if there is a guarantee for face-to-face talks with the Taliban. He said the past experience in this connection should not be repeated.
In a similar conference held in Abdul Dhabi last month, representatives of the U.S, Pakistan, the KSA and the UAE as well as the Taliban took part, but the rebels declined to meet Kabul government’s representatives.
On the other end, the Taliban have announced not to take part in the forthcoming moot in Jeddah. The group’s spokesman has told Reuters the UAE and the KSA have asked them to meet with the Afghan delegation, and that is why they have decided not to participate in the Jeddah conference.
Syed Ehsani Tahiri also said on Sunday Mohammad Umer Daudzai, secretary for the HPC, would visit Pakistan this week in a bid to develop regional consensus for peace in Afghanistan. The spokesman expressed optimism major positive developments would take place in coming three months.
