KABUL (SW): Pir Sayed Ahmad Gailani, Chairman of the High Peace Council (HPC) passed away yesterday evening in one of the hospitals in Kabul at the age of 84.
Pir Gailani was the founder of the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan (Mahaz-i-Milli Islami ye Afghanistan), a party that was associated with the Mujahideen who led the war against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has pronounced the death of Pir Gailani as a profound loss for the country.
Pir Sayed Ahmad Gailani was a direct descendant of Abdul Qader Gailani who was the founder of Qadiriyyah Sufi order. Habibullah Khan, the then king of Afghanistan welcomed Abdul Qader in Afghanistan who had come from Baghdad where Qader Gailani was born. Pir Sayed Ahmad Gailani studied Sharia Law at the Kabul University. In 1952, he married the granddaughter of king Habibullah Khan making his ties very close to the rulers of Afghanistan.
During the transitional presidency of Hamid Karzai, Ahmad Gailani become the Chief Justice of Afghanistan. He has been associated with both Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani for having close ties and political ambitions.
