KABUL (SW): Mohammad Hanif Atmar, the National Security Advisor, has held extensive meetings with high ranking officials of Turkmenistan in Asghabat.
Tawab Gorzang, spokesman for the National Security Council, told Salam Watandar that the role of Turkmenistan is of great importance in terms of peace, stability and development in Afghanistan.
He noted that the Advisor assured Turkmenistan about measures taken by the Afghan government to ensure security at the border between the two countries.
“Turkmenistan is our brotherly neighbor, we are pursuing a policy to jointly strive for peace and progress in the region”, he said.
Gorzag stated that among other issues, security for the Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (TAPI) gas pipeline and other mega projects were also discussed.
Analysts believe, considering Turkmenistan’s old ties with the Taliban, Asghabat government can play important role towards peace and stability in Afghanistan.
In the opinion of Waheed Mujda, a security affairs’ expert, Turkmenistan has always remained a reliable neighbor for Afghanistan. “The Afghan government seems to be looking for countries besides Pakistan with some clout over the Taliban in a bid to bring them to the negotiation table”, he said.
