Historical sites on the verge of destruction in Ghazni

GHAZNI CITY (SW): The remnants of Ghaznavid era historical monuments and sites are on the verge of destruction due to war and natural disasters in Ghazni province.

Asadullah Jalazai, an activist in the province, told Salam Watandar the Citadel of Ghazni, the Begum Minaret in Jaghatu district, the Naiy fortress in Qara Bagh district and the tomb of Sultan Shahabuddin in Deh Yak district besides many other historical sites have been seriously damaged due to the ragging war, lack of care and negligence on the part of the locals as well as the officials. Freshta Sadid, another activist, said lack of professionals at the provincial Directorate of Information and Culture has hampered prospects for preserving and renovating these sites.

Hamidullah Sarwari, head of provincial cultural committee, has also grilled the government for it. He said the provincial Directorate of Information and Culture has failed in accumulating funds for the reconstruction of the historical sites and monuments in Ghazni.

Meanwhile, Bashir Mohamadi, director at the provincial Directorate of Information and Culture, admitted that the historical sites and monuments- especially the Ghazni citadel, the Begum Minaret and Amanullah Khan’s Palace in Ghazni-are on the verge of total destruction. “We do not have funds for the reconstruction of the historical sites”, plead Mohammadi.

Ghazni was chosen as the Capital of Islamic Culture in the Asian region for the year 2013 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
