KABUL (SW): Officials from Afghanistan, Iran and India on Saturday underlined importance of the Chabahar port in boosting trade and trilateral ties.
The officials gathered in Nimroz province today to welcome the first consignment of wheat for Afghanistan from India via Iran’s Chabahar port.
Naseer Ahmad Durrani, minister for agriculture, irrigation and livestock, said on the occasion that the wheat from India would be stored at the strategic depots in seven different provinces. He added the three countries have chalked plans to further promote trade ties among them and beyond via Chabahar port.
According to the officials, the first consignment of wheat from India weighing 832 metric tons has been brought to Afghanistan in 544 shipping containers. The minister stressed Afghanistan eyes to turn into a hub for regional and transit trade in the region.
Mohammad Reza Bahrami, ambassador of Iran in Afghanistan, said on the occasion that the Chabahar port is not aimed at competition, but for regional economic cooperation. Ambassador Bahrami stressed the success story of Chabahar has proved regional economic cooperation is possible, and regional countries should take advantage of the available opportunities in this context.
Ambassador of India in Afghanistan Manpreet Vohra announced a second consignment of 110 thousand tons of wheat would be shipped from India via Chabahar to Afghanistan in February next year. He noted the Chabahar port links Afghanistan to the whole world.
