TARINKOT (SW): The main highway linking Kandahar with the restive Uruzgan province remains closed despite an extensive clean-up operation against the militants in Tarinkot.
The Afghan National Security and Defence Forces (ANSDF) have recaptured Tarinkot after breaking a long siege by the Taliban. An alternate route to Kandahar was established through an unpaved road, but that has not helped resolve the issues faced by the passengers on this busy route. Thousands of passengers and goods carriers ply on this route, and they are finding the alternate route not feasible at all.
Abdul Wahid, one of the commuters, told Salam Watandar many patients, elderly, women and children suffer via commuting on the alternate route to and from Kandahar. He feared this route would further deteriorate as the rainy season is approaching. Deen Mohammad, a transporter, said their vehicles often trap in the mud, and then the passengers pull it out. He urged upon the government to clear the main highway as soon as possible.
Abdul Ali Shamshi, deputy governor for Kandahar, said in this regard a survey for the reconstruction of the main highway has been completed. He promised to not only reconstruct this highway, but ensure security on it as well.
