GARDEZ (SW) – Literary figures and local civil society in Paktia gathered here on Wednesday to raise awareness about heritage sites faced with destruction.
They said many sites here with historic and cultural importance are faced with eminent destruction. They charged the government for being ignorant and also blamed the UNICEF for turning a blind eye to these heritage sites here.
They unanimously urged UNESCO to register the Bala Hissar Fort of Gardez as protective heritage site.
Meanwhile the provincial directorate of information and culture has vowed the history of the Bala Hissar Fort would soon be preserved and afterwards it would be rehabilitated to its original form.
During his trip to the province, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani pledged to provide $ 5 million for the rehabilitation of the Bala Hissar Fort in Gardez, but so far no actions are seen on the ground in this regard.
