Helmand residents irked by corrupt district police chief

26/05/2016

KABUL (SW): A number of residents from southern province Helmand gathered in Kabul and told journalists that Timor Shah, the Police Chief in Garmsir district, is involved in theft, drug smuggling and immorality.

These residents claimed that Timor Shah and his subordinates persecute the residents and abuse children. They said that they have complained to the government about him in the past but their complaints fell on deaf ears.

“He is illiterate and pets residents against each other. He is the reason for the insecurity in Garmsir”, one of the residents said. They said that if their complaints were not taken seriously, they would stage a demonstration.

Omar Zawak, spokesman for the governor in Helmand, said that based on the evidence and complaints received from the resident in Garmsir, the governor has sacked Timor Shah.

Zawak said that the protestors could have raised the issue with the governor in Helmand before coming to Kabul.
