Hekmatyar: War in Afghanistan has ethnic flare

08/11/2017

KABUL (SW): Gulbadin Hekmatyar, the leader of the Hezb-e Islami, said that the current conflict in the north and in the rest of the country is not between the armed opposition and the government, but “between the two ethnicities”.

Hezb-e Islami leader today in a meeting at the Loya Jirga tent in Kabul said that the groups that consider the continued war in their benefit, have taken the security forces hostage (hypothetically) to use their military power and military equipment against the ethnic and political rivals.

Mr. Hekmatyar called on the government to rescue the security forces from the control of these groups. He said his party has entered a new phase in its long struggle, and this stage is harder than the armed struggle.

Hekmatyar called today’s gathering the biggest event in the country and called on all his supporters to prepare for the upcoming elections. The leader of Hezb-e Islami continues to deny the disharmony between the members of his party and said that some political parties tried to dislodge the Hezb-e Islami and they did not succeed.

Hekmatyar warned that no one should be thinking of abolishing the current system, and all parties must wait until the next elections. He also said that in the past, Soviet Union and the British had occupied Afghanistan and now it has been attacked by NATO and the United States of America.

Gulbadin Hekmatyar has used armed struggles to gain power for years in Kabul, and for the past 15 years, he fought in a hope to overthrow the government after the defeat of Taliban, demanded the complete withdrawal of foreign forces and the creation of an Islamic state. He eventually abandoned all these demands and joined the peace process in Afghanistan.
