FEROZKOH CITY (SW): Heavy snow in Ghor has blocked all main roads connecting districts of this central province to the provincial capital Ferozkoh.
Hamidullah Dadfar, Head of Disaster Management Authority Office (DMAO) in Ghor, told Salam Watandar that such heavy snowfall has been unprecedented in the province. He added that if it continued, a catastrophe would happen.
He further said that residents in Ghor always recommend their needs for winter to the government and donor institutions before winter arrives. According to Dadfar, no assistance has reached to the province so far and DMAO is at a terrible condition.
He emphasized that if something horrible happened, the DMAO could do nothing about it in terms of providing residents with any urgent assistances.
He urged upon government and donor institutions to send assistances as soon as possible.
Abdul Hai Khatibi, Spokesman for Governor of Ghor, told Salam Watandar that DMAO has purchased foodstuff and shelters worth at afn 800 million, which is not enough.
The World Food Program has pledged to 400 families to cover them with their assistances in case of any eminent disaster.
Dadfar said that the government has provided them with some assistance, which is meager and is never enough.
Local government officials said that many of the residents are poor and cannot go to the mountains to collect wood to keep them warm since the mountains are covered with snow.
Lack of public health services in the remote areas of the province is another challenge that the residents struggle with. Considering the blocked roads due to snow, many patients have reportedly lost their lives on their way to the hospital.
