Heavy floods cause havoc in Farah, Herat

FARAH/ HERAT (SW) – Heavy floods caused by torrential rain have caused havoc in Farah and Herat provinces.

Abdul Qadeer Elhaam, head of the National Disasters Management Authority in Farah, told Salam Watandar the Pusht Koh, Anar Dara, Khak-e-Safaid, Pusth Rod and Bala Bulook districts have sustained heavy losses due to flash floods. He said initial estimates suggest hundreds jeribs of land, gardens, homes, shops and wells have been damaged.

He confirmed at least six people have lost their lives in this connection. Head of the NDMA in Farah said rescue support has been provided to the affected people, but more support is needed from the aid agencies as well.

Meanwhile, Manan Mateen, head of the directorate of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, has lamented that there are no storage facilities available to store water from such improve precipitation this year, and all water is flowing freely to neighboring countries.

In neighboring Herat, head of the NDMA Abdul Hameed Mubarezk, said six people got killed and four more got injured due to floods. He confirmed more than 200 homes got damaged due to floods. He added Herat city, Injil, Guzara, Adraskan, Ghoryan, Chest, Kohsan and Rubat Sangi districts have sustained losses due to floods.

In northern Badghes province, avalanches have caused troubles for the locals. According to the provincial officials, the main Badghes – Herat highway has been closed due to heavy snowfall.

Deputy governor, Syed Mohammed Mirzada, told Salam Watandar efforts are underway to soon reopen this important highway.
