
CHARIKAR (SW) – Thunderstorms and flash floods triggered by torrential rain killed at least 50 people and injured more than 90 others in Parwan province.
Director public health, Safiaullah Warastah has said most of the victims are women and children. According to Nisar Ahmad Habibi, provincial head of the disaster management authority, said the floods have completely destroyed about 500 homes in the province.
According to him, rescue operations are still underway to pull out people trapped under the rubble. He feared the death toll was likely to surge.
Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid has left for Parwan province. He instructed officials in the province to step up rescue operations.
Floods have led to closure of main roads in Charikar, provincial capital.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani directed the State Ministry for Disaster Management, Ministries of Health, Public Works, Rural Development and other relevant departments to expedite rescue and relief operations. President Ghani urged citizens to extend helping hand towards their country mates in need.
Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the Supreme National Reconciliation Council, also expressed concern over the loss of lives and the destruction of houses as a result of floods in Parwan province. According to a statement, Abdullah called on the authorities to provide assistance to the flood victims.
