GARDEZ (SW) – A public sector health education facility in the southeastern zone, the Gardez Institute of Health Sciences, was established here on Monday.
The facility would teach pharmacy, physiotherapy and laboratory related subjects. At least 26 boys and girls from each of the four provinces in the zone would be able to have admission here for the two-year and three-year programs.
Dr. Wilayat Khan Ahmadzai, head of the directorate of public health, said on the occasion a new compound would be established for this institute. He added at present, the facilities of hostel and others have been furnished.
He added a block dedicated for female students has been established in the provincial public hospital, and half of that compound has been furnished.
Nazeema Azizi, a female student of the GIHS, said she would serve the public in the province after graduating from here. She said insecurity has forced many doctors to quit jobs in the remote districts.
At least 13 districts of the Paktia province have some sort of public health facilities, but only two, Gardez and Aryub Zazi, have female doctors while the rest remain deprived of female doctors.
