KABUL (SW) – The office of former president Hamid Karzai on Friday rushed to welcome a ceasefire announcement made by the Taliban last year.
In a social media post, Karzai welcomed the ceasefire announced by the Taliban, and urged the Afghan government to reciprocate the move.
This came in the backdrop of a viral social media audio clip in which the Taliban insurgents across the country are directed by their leaders to ceasefire during the three-day Eid, an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
On Thursday, a meeting between a number of Afghan politicians including Karzai and the Taliban ended without a breakthrough in Moscow.
On Friday, Zabihullah Mujahed, the Taliban spokesman clarified in a statement that the viral audio clip on ceasefire is indeed from the last year, and no such decision has been made for this Eid.
