Gull Andam; a wife & mother beaten to death

CHAGCHARAN (SW): The 40 year old Gull Andam is one of many female victims of domestic violence who has shared her story with Salam Watandar in Ghor province.

Mother to 5 sons and 2 daughters, Gull Andam said: ‘Half of my body has stopped working permanently ever since my husband threw me in a well”. Gull Andam dded that when she was a young girl her parents gave her away to settle a personal feud in the village. 18 years later, she was married to a man she did not knew. Gull Andam said she has been made victim of domestic violence throughout her life, and she has lost the track of it.

Sharing the last episode of this tragic ordeal with Salam Watandar, Gull said that that her husband lifted her from her hair and started stabbing her before throwing her into the well.

Gull Andam, who is now under treatment in Ghor Public Hospital, further said that though her husband now regrets but she is despised of him and is no longer willing to return to her husband’s home. Gull Andam’s mother Gohar, in the meantime, noted that she also does not want her daughter to go back to her husband’s home because this would put her life at risk.

Her mother claimed that she has asked the local officials to arrest the culprit on many occasions but to no avail.   

Meanwhile, Farida Nasiri, the in-charge for the Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in the province, said that the commission has taken Gull Andam to a hospital and she is in critical state. Nasiri mentioned that though, once her husband was arrested on charges of committing domestic violence, but he was released a month later.

Quoting the doctors, the in-charge for IHRC in the province noted that Gull Andam’s back has been broken while being thrown into the well by her husband, and half of her body has been paralyzed as result of stabbing.

In the meantime, Gen. Zia-u-ddin Saqeeb, the acting police chief in Ghor province, while acknowledging the matter, noted that the police have done its best so far in this regard and the court is pursuing Gull Andam’s case.
