Guidelines prepared for the safety of dams

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Energy and Water announced to have prepared the safety guidelines for construction, planning and maintenance of the country's dams.

Mohammad Khan Takal, deputy minister for the MoEW, told a moot in this connection that these guidelines would play key role in safeguarding the dams. He said a group of local and foreign experts have monitored and evaluated up to ten dams in the country that were built some sixty years ago.

Mir Ahmad Ahmad, water affairs expert at the World Bank, said on the occasion these guidelines are in line with the policy guidelines for the safety of dams by the WB. He added construction of Qargha Dam and reconstruction of Daronta Dam has also begun. The guidelines have been prepared with the support of the WB.

Officials from the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and the National Disasters Management Authority said on the occasion these guidelines would also help save water resources from wastage, and avert natural disasters.

It was noted that up to 20 dams in the country desperately need reconstruction. Officials said surveys have completed for the Qargha Dam and Daronta Dam, and soon work would commence on the dams of Mahepar, Sarobi, Naghlo, Sarhoz, Sultan, Dehla and Kajaki.
