KABUL (SW): Mujib Mohammadi holds a masters’ degree in engineering and can fluently speak English, French, and Spanish among other local languages, but he is just like hundreds of other drug addicts now, spending days and nights near sewerage lines in the capital Kabul.

Upon witnessing this seemingly different man among the lot of drug addicts, Salam Watandar reporter approached and asked if he would mind having a chat.

Mohammadi agreed and in the conversation later revealed what he went through before ending-up as a heroin addict.

The 30-year old said that he hails from western Herat province but only moved to Kabul after losing his whole family to the militants. Mohammadi went on to say that he served as translator for the foreign troops, the Taliban from Shindand district beheaded all of his family members except a young sister.

The poor girl lost her senses upon witnessing the barbaric act and remained hospitalized in Kabul for a year. And, for Mohammadi, that was the moment when he gave-up and turned to narcotics to escape from the hard realities of life.

Talking to Salam Watandar, Mohammadi said he wished to quit drugs and move back to his hometown only if the society accepts him. “But, when I see the people’s behavior towards me, I end-up back in the drug dens”, he said.
