KABUL (SW): A number of media practitioners on Wednesday lamented the indifference of certain officials who do not cooperate in regard to the Right of Access to Information Law (RAIL).
In a moot organized by the UNESCO, Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Unity Government (NUG) promised strict measures to ensure the Law is implemented in its true spirit. In his address, Abdullah said the citizens are entitled to have access to information, and it is their basic right.
He acknowledged reports about some officials pressurizing media houses to air news in their favor, but stressed the NUG would not tolerate such behavior. He assured media houses of full support.
Hawa Noristani, member of the oversight commission on the Right of Access to Information Law, said on the occasion that the government should strive towards strengthening this commission so that it can work independently. She called for dedicated budget and office for the commission.
Najiba Ayubi, head of The Kilid Group, hailed the Right of Access to Information Law, but regretted that it has not been implemented in the true spirit. She charged that some officials are taking advantage of this Law. Najiba also stressed that the officials must comply with the Right of Access to Information Law.
