Government urged to hold party based elections

KABUL (SW): A gathering of former jihadi and political figures urged the government on Monday to allow party based elections in the country.

This was noted as the newly established High Council of Jihadi and Political Parties (HCJPP) announced its existence in the capital Kabul. This council represents some eleven parties, it was said on the occasion.

Syed Hamid Gillani, spokesman for the council told journalists that HCJPP plans to spread its message across the country. “This council is made up of eleven jihadi, spiritual and political parties and would soon spread to other provinces as well”, Gillani said on the occasion.

He went on to say that this council supports government’s endeavors for peace. Gillani stressed that the government should curb corruption, ensure rule of the law and create jobs for the youth.

The alliance urged that electoral reform process must be expedited and political parties must have a say in it. Prior to this, a number of jihadi figures and high ranking officials of the previous government declared to form a similar council. The new Afghanistan Protection and Stability Council is "not an anti-government body" but is seeking "fundamental reforms to the way government operates," Abdul Rasool Sayyaf, a leader of that party then said.
