“Government is not prepared to hold the election”

07/12/2015

KABUL (SW): The Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) said that the government has no preparation for holding parliamentary and district council election.

Official at FEFA at an event” Prospect for District Council Election” said on Monday that the government keeps distancing from the Constitution each day and people are losing trust over the government.

Yousuf Rashid, Chief Executive Officer at FEFA, speaking at the event, urged the government to start working on selection committee and added that the Afghan politicians should avoid misusing civil society institutions.

He further said that the government has not put any efforts towards launching the elections.

A number of Wolesi Jirga’s members too said that the current commissioners at the elections commissions should be removed and the dates for parliamentary and district council elections should be specified soon.

Miagul Wasiq, socio-political relations director at the Office of Administrative Affairs, said that the government faces no obstacles starting selection committee work. He said that they would try to set the exact date of selection committee work in the next two days.

He added that the more coordinated the civil society institutions, the more credible would be selection committee work and the more legitimate the elections process.

The work of selection committee which was the responsibility of commissioners at election commissions was due weeks ago.

Government officials blame the postponement for differences at civil society institutions for introducing their representatives but civil society linked to the elections have announced their representatives to be introduced as the member at the selection committee.
