KABUL (SW): A well-placed source has informed Salam Watandar that the government has decided to utilize the Ministry of Education (MoE)’s property near Pul-i-Artal for commercial purposes.

A letter number 19557 by the High Economic Council (HEC) dated 31 May 2017 has directed the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MoUDH) to ensure handing over of a specific portion of property in area stretching from the Pul-i-Artal to Shah Do Shamshera Shrine along the Kabul River in the downtown. Currently, there are at least three educational institutions located in this area namely the Afghan-Turk School, Aryana Niswan School and Khwaja Abdullah Ansari high school. It also houses a private wedding hall.

Officials at the MoUDH believe the security concerns that previously hindered development work in this area are clear now, hence this stretch of property can be commercially utilized. Nelofar Langar, spokesman for the MoUDH, informed Salam Watandar that an initial report for this project has been sent to the HEC.

This comes amid dearth of space and other facilities for schools. Mujib Meherdad, spokesman for the MoE, has lamented the move by the HEC. He said the government has taken this decision at a time when the MoE desperately needs space and facilities to promote education. There are a large numbers of children studying under open skies or in rented facilities.
