HERAT CITY (SW): The administration of Ghoryan district in Herat has blamed insufficient police force for the rampant smuggling of narcotics.
Syed Abdul Kareem, chief of the district told journalists on Monday there are no poppy fields in Ghoryan, but the district has become a main transit point for narcotics between the northern and southern provinces. He added smugglers move narcotics from Badghes to Farah and Nimroz provines.
The district chief said smuggling of arms and ammunition is also taking place via Ghoryan which has left negative impacts on the overall security situation here. He added the district has vast desert areas, and the limited number of policemen is not sufficient to patrol it.
The local officials claimed to have destroyed two narcotics processing factories and two depots belonging to the Taliban militants in Ghoryan. Meanwhile, Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor, has also acknowledged the fact about Ghoryan being a transit route for drug peddlers. He, however, asserted that the security forces would not allow smugglers to operate with liberty.
