MAIMANA (SW): The Taliban militants have managed to overrun Ghormach district in Faryab for the fourth time in two years’ time, officials confirmed on Sunday.s
Ahmad Javed, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Salam Watandar the militants waged coordinated group assaults on district center few days back, and finally managed to overrun the police headquarters and main market today. Abdullah Waqif, district governor, said in this regard that he along with a battalion of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and 35 members of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) are under the siege of the Taliban. He informed that intense clashes between the militants and the security forces are underway.
Qari Yosuf Ahmadi, spokesman for the Taliban, has asserted in a statement that the police headquarters, district administration building and the main market are under their control. In his claim, the Taliban spokesman also said large cache of arms and ammunition have been confiscated from the security forces besides inflicted human losses on them.
This is the fourth time in two years’ time that Ghormach has fallen to the Taliban.
