CHAGCHARAN (SW): Residents of Ghor province say they are compelled to refer to the Taliban for justice due to lack of judges in six districts of the province.
Six southern districts of the province are particularly affected in this regard. Mohammad Qasim, a resident of the Teora district of the province, told Salam Watandar people in this district refer to the Taliban either due to the lack of judges or due to delay in justice in the public courts. He added the government courts drag the cases for too long, that is why many people prefer to take their disputes to the Taliban for ‘speedy justice’. Qasim urged the government to take immediate steps to turn the people away from the Taliban’s informal justice.
Abdul Baseer Qadri, deputy chairman of the provincial council, admitted the issue of having less number of judges at the judicial centers in some districts of the province. He cited this as the main reason why people of the province refer to local elders or the Taliban for legal matters.
Acknowledging the problem, Abdulhai Khatibi, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Salam Watandar efforts are underway to appoint representatives of the judiciary in these six districts. He also warned those judicial officials who are not attending courts in these districts to come and serve the people or face legal action.
