GHOR (SW) – A number of Ghor residents took to the streets today against not allocating funds in the ‘unjust’ national budget for the Pozlich Dam and central route of the Kabul – Herat highway.
The protesters closed the gates of all government offices and markets in the provincial capital. The protesters warned they will continue their protests until funds are allocated for the construction of the Pozlich Dam and central route of the Kabul-Herat highway passing through Ghor. They also warned not to allow any government employees to work in the province.
A number of religious scholars in Ghor, who also took part in the protest, accused the government officials of ignoring the demands of the people of the province. They said the government has so far done nothing for the people of the province. Mohammed Ahmadi, a religious scholar in Ghor, said on the occasion, the Ministry of Finance employees would be expelled from the province.
Ghulam Nasser Khadie, the governor of Ghor, acknowledged the demands of the residents of the province, and said that only 10 kilometers of asphalt road is planned in this year's financial budget for Ghor with another 100 kilometers for next year.
The protesters had warned that civil disobedience would be triggered if their demands were ignored.
This comes as the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) today approved the National Budget Plan for 2020-21. The total budget is AFN 428 billion with AFN 289 billion for expenditures and AFN 139 billion for development.
