KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has stressed upon measures to curb corruption at the Ministry of Defense (MoD), cut down soldiers’ fatalities and better equip them.

He was speaking at a ceremony commemorating the martyrs of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) at the Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Monday. Ghani said corruption at the MoD is not acceptable. Highlighting the measures taken to ensure transparency in the procurement at the MoD, he said reforms would ensure better medical treatment for the wounded soldiers.

President Ghani further said measures have been taken to curb corruption in the ministry, but are not enough. He said at least 700 employees at the MoD have either been fired or transfered in a bid to ensure transparency.

Ghani handed over keys of new apartment to the heirs of 14 ANA martyrs, and promised to continue this drive.

Jawed Kohistani, an analyst on military affairs, told Salam Watandar many types of corruption exist at the MoD. “If corruption continues in the security sector, the west will decrease aid to Afghanistan”, warned Khohistani.
