Ghani sees fighting escalate before winter kicks in

KABUL (SW): Analysts believe President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s last evening address to the security leadership was aimed at getting them ready for the Taliban militants’ final assaults before the winter kicks in.

Addressing the top security leadership in Kabul on Tuesday evening, Ghani urged them to overcome shortcomings or else would be made accountable. Ghani termed the next three weeks crucial in this regard. Haigul Sulaimankhail, an expert on military affairs, told Salam Watandar that winter is just three weeks away, and it is highly likely that the militants would try to inflict serious damage before that. In his views, Ghani seemed aware about it. “The weather would get colder in three weeks’ time, the President meant that these three weeks are tough, the weather is fine and perhaps there would be more attack”.

Jawed Ghafoor, another expert on security, noted that the Taliban are likely to cause havoc in a bid to gain more weight for the proposed peace talks. He hinted that hence more bloodshed is in sight. Ghafoor said that the Afghan government and the international community seem set to launch the peace process, and President Ghani believe fighting might escalate before that.

In his remarks last evening, the President lauded the sacrifices and resolve of the security forces. Ghani also urged the security leadership to ensure safety of the civilians.
