KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday rang school bell to commence new academic year across the country.
Speaking on the occasion at the Amania High School, President Ghani said though Afghanistan has witnessed significant improvement in terms of numbers of schools and students, but quality of education still remains low. He pronounced the new lunar year 1397 as the ‘Year of Education’.
The President said up to $ 200 million have been earmarked to develop 6000 schools across the country. He also promised to allocate land to teachers for residence.
Ghani underlined the need to curb corruption at the Ministry of Education besides vowing to ensure availability of books and other academic materials in the public schools.
This comes as up to 3.5 million children remain out of schools while up to 1000 schools remain closed due to ragging insecurity.
