KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has lamented that the country’s water resources have gone in waste for years but it would not be allowed as it has been in the future.
Ghani was addressing a conference here on Saturday aimed at the promotion of agriculture in the country. The Afghan President lamented that the previous government have done nothing to map the country’s water resources and put in place measures to secure it. He regretted that the country’s water has been flowing away to the neighboring countries for years now.
Water is our top priority now, our water resources must be mapped and secured”, he noted. Ghani announced that some 21 new dams would be constructed across the country in a year. He underlined the importance of these reservoirs in terms of avoiding floods and securing water.
Mohammad Ashraf Ghani acknowledged that the farmer community has a number of reservations that needs to be addressed. He specifically noted providing enough water to them, supplying them with the improved seeds and other resources to enable them do their job with an ease. Role of the private sector was also stressed upon in this conference in terms of enhancing exports.
Ghani ruled out economic sustainability without a robust agriculture sector.
Speaking on the occasion, Assadullah Zamir, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MoAIL), said that plans are in place to ensure comprehensive and uniformed approach towards enhancing agriculture in all provinces. He noted that farmers in restive parts of the country would be informed about the latest developments via visual material.
