KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani opened a rehab and vocational training center for the addicts on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the center, the President warned the drug traffickers that they would be dealt with severely.

He said that there are personal gains and sustenance behind addicting the citizens to drugs. He added that if the drug smugglers didn’t facilitate it for the addicts, there would be no addicts at all.

“To make fortune, mafia endangers lives of million citizens”, he pointed out.

The president went on to say that addiction is an international menace and the international community and other donor countries should unite to eradicate this evil phenomenon in Afghanistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Ferozuddin Feroz, Minister for Public Health, said that based on the recent survey, the number of drug addicts in 2015 reach to 2.9 to 3.6 million in the country.

He added that 15 percent of the population are addicted to drugs and blamed unemployment, insecurity terrorism and an easy access to drugs as the main causes for alarming rise in the number of drug users.
