KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has assured the citizens that no one would be allowed to breach privacy or commit human rights violations.

“National Conference on Protection of Human Rights Defenders” was convened today in Kabul with the participation of human rights and civil society activists.

Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has noted some improvement in the human rights conditions in the country. Officials at the AIHRC said on the occasion that human rights conditions have improved in comparison to the previous years, but insecurity still threatens lives. AIHRC urged the government to also protect human rights defenders in the country.

Human rights defenders have sacrificed for these achievements, Seema Samar, head of the AIHRC said. She believed that improvement in state of human rights is not possible without the sacrifice of human rights defenders.

Seema Samar urged government to prevent outlawed persons from committing human rights violations. She demanded justice for everyone and stressed that authorities should strive for the rule of law.

Addressing the moot, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani criticized Taliban for gross negligence of human rights. He added that protection of human rights’ defenders is the duty of judiciary. The President praised human rights and civil society activists.

Franz Michael Melbin, European Union Ambassador in Afghanistan, expressed that the EU is one of the key supporters of human rights defenders. Representatives from the UNAMA expressed in the conference that UNAMA has recorded at least 240 cases of violence against human rights defenders in the previous year alone.
