KABUL (SW): Pakistan’s powerful Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif is due in the Afghan Capital Kabul on Sunday for crucial last moment discussion about reviving the stalled peace talks between the Kabul government and the Taliban.
Raheel Sharif is going to visit Afghanistan a day after Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister visited the country and inaugurated the new parliament building on Friday. Modi also handed over three fighter Mi-25 helicopters to the Afghan government.
While addressing the joint session of the parliament in the new house, Modi urged that Afghanistan’s neighbors should play constructive role for the reconstruction of the country. He added peace and stability in the country would not be possible if terrorist continue to enter and destabilize it.
Asim Bajwa, Pakistan Army spokesman has written on his Twitter handle that the Gen. Sharif on his one day official tour would meet high ranking officials in Kabul.
Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper quoted a government official who asked not to be named, saying that Gen. Sharif would talk about the revival of peace talks.
Pakistan pledged to help revive peace talks during the meeting with officials of Afghanistan, the United States and China on the sideline of Heart of Asia Istanbul Process (HAIP) meeting in Islamabad early this month.
Pakistan also promised that it would target terrorists undermining the sovereignty of the government. It is worth mentioning that a meeting of the representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, United States and China is also likely to be held in January next year.
