KABUL (SW): This year Valentine’s Day coincided with the 28th anniversary of the withdrawal of the former Soviet Unions’ Red Army from Afghanistan in 1989.
For some years now, the Valentine’s Day has been celebrated with evident enthusiasm in the urban parts of the country. Young couples can be seen exchanging red roses on the occasion. But, for some it is an expensive day to begin with. Expensive gifts are exchanged among couples of the affluent families.
If you happen to cross the Wazir Akbar Khan or the Shahr-i-Naw areas of the city on that day, the atmosphere seems quite different to the otherwise routine. Balloons and red roses can be seen at the flower shops more prominently than ever.
Afghan couples gift and surprise each other on this special day. Zubair and Sanam, two such couples told Salam Watandar they never miss to celebrate this day. On this year’s Valentine’s Day, Zubair proposed Sanam, and she happily said Yes!
