KABUL (SW) – The Taliban militants on Sunday announced to release 20 captive security forces in Kandahar province.
“Today (Sunday), 20 prisoners of the Kabul Administration (Afghan government) will be released by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) and handed over to ICRC (International Committee of Red Cross) in Kandahar”, Suhail Shaheen, the spokesman for the Taliban’s Qatar office tweeted.
On the day of his swearing-in ceremony, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani ordered the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners and said they would be gradually released from prisons as part of a peace effort.
According to a released prisoner, the released prisoners were from Parwan, Paktia, Paktika, Baghlan, Helmand, Kandahar and some other provinces.
The office of the National Security Council has announced that a third batch of 100 Taliban prisoners have been released from prison on the basis of a decree issued by President Ghani.
