KABUL (SW) – A group of former Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday stressed the presidential elections should be halted for now.
Addressing a presser in this connection, Humayun Humayun, head of the group, said the prevailing situation in the country is not suitable for the polls, and the peace process should be given priority. He expressed concerns over the worsening security situation across the country.
Expressing support for the peace process, Humayun said security situation in all 34 provinces remains fragile.
In the meantime, Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, spokesman for the Independent Election Commission, said voting would only not take place in areas with high-security risk. He added out of a total of 5373 polling stations, only 400 to 500 would remain close on the polling day.
The presidential polls are set to take place on Sep. 28 later this month.
The presidential palace has time and again asserted the polls would go ahead as planned.
