KABUL (SW) – Mawlawi Qalamuddin, a former Taliban-era official, on Saturday said forthcoming presidential elections should be overlooked for the proposed peace deal in the country.
Qalamuddin, head of the Harakat Inqliban Islami party, told a presser in Kabul that the peace process can help resolve all troubles of the country, but the polls cannot. Urging the Taliban to continue with the peace talks, he expressed concerns over surging civilian casualties in the country.
He said Afghans expect a ceasefire, and the Taliban should take effective measures in this regard.
About the marathon round of talks in Doha between the U.S. and the Taliban, he said matters related to the withdrawal of foreign troops, no threats of terrorism emerging from Afghanistan, the definition of terrorism and a number of other matters were discussed in Qatar.
Salam Watandar wished to have the views of Arg (presidency) but to no avail.
Qalamuddin is among a number of politicians who have blamed President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani for exploiting the consultative grand council Loya Jirga for politican gains.
