KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has acquired the services of legendary Pakistani batsman Inzimamul Haq (Inzi) to coach the Afghan squad for their upcoming tour to Zimbabwe.
Inzi is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen Pakistan has produced. He is the third Pakistani cricketer to take the charge as coach for Afghanistan. The ACB Chief Executive Shafiqullah Stanikzai has told Cricinfo that Inzimam’s performance in Zimbabwe would be evaluated and his contract might be extended for two more years.
The elegant right-handed batsman, who has also served as Captain of Pakistan, would replace Afghanistan’s former English Coach Andy Moles. Inzimam played for Pakistan for 15 years. He appeared in 120 tests and 378 One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The Afghan and International Cricket Council (ICC) officials interviewed a number of contenders before signing the former Pakistani captain. Before signing Inzimam, the ACB said talks were underway with Pakistan’s leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmad and Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jaysuria for the post.
The ACB has said nothing as when Inzimam would join the Afghan team.
