Floods cause havoc in 19 provinces

KABUL (SW) – Heavy floods in 19 provinces across the country claimed at least 151 lives and left some 250 others injured, officials confirmed.

The floods were caused by heavy rains inn Charikar city, the capital of Parwan province, Surobi district of Kabul and parts of Kapisa, Panjshir, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Nangarhar, Paktia, Paktika, Nuristan and Khost provinces.

Wahida Shahkar, spokeswoman for the governor of Parwan, told Salam Watandar that the number of flood victims in Charikar has risen to 90 with 106 injured.

Dozens of bodies and more than 100 wounded have been taken to hospitals across Parwan, said Dr. Safiaullah Warasteh, Parwan's director of health. According to him, the rescue operation is still ongoing and the number of casualties were likely to increase.

The Ministry for Disaster Management said 19 people have been killed in floods in Kabul's Surobi district.

Qais Qaderi, a spokesman for the Kapisa governor, said 20 people got killed and 19 injured here on top of destruction of scores of houses in the villages of Shawakh and Aramkot in Kuhband district, while four people remain missing.

Saifur Rahman Khalili, the district governor of Kuhband district, said there was a possibility of an increase in casualties here as well as a bridge connecting the district with the provincial capital got demolished.

Mohammad Sharif Amin, head of the Kapisa disaster management department, said floods have been reported in the Kuhband and Nijrab districts here. Mohammad Shoaib Danish, director of health in Kapisa province, said that 9 bodies and 12 wounded have been brought to the public hospital.

Mansour Anabi, spokesman for the governor of Panjshir, said that the floods in the province left 3 killed and 2 injured. Mohammad Amin Siddiqui, the deputy governor of Panjshir, said that as a result of the floods, residents of Shitl, Anaba, Rokha, Dara and Aabshaar districts of the province were affected. Siddiqui said that due to the closure roads in the province, the exact number of victims has not been determined yet.

In Maidan Wardak, Mohibullah Sharifzai, spokesman for the governor said that 7 people got killed and 30 others injured while 4 children remain missing as a result of floods in Daimirdad, Chek, Sayed Abad, Nima and Jalriz districts of the province.

Floods have also caused casualties in Nangarhar province. Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, said two people got killed and four others got injured here.

According to the provincial disaster management authority, based on the primary statistics Kabul, Parwan, Kapisa, Maidan Wardak, Panjshir, Nangarhar, Logar, Paktia, Paktika, Nuristan, Laghman and Khost provinces saw some 1,500 residential houses, several shops and 1,100 jeribs of agricultural land destroyed and over 600 cattle lost.
