KUNDUZ CITY (SW) – The Kunduz chapter of the High Peace Council (HPC) has cited financial constraints as reasons behind inability to promote peace process in the province.
Mawlawi Abdul Baseer, head of HPC in Kunduz, told Salam Watandar due to lack of funds, the Taliban rebels willing to shun violence cannot be facilitated. He lamented many of the former Taliban rebels who had joined the peace process got killed.
HPC secretary in the province, Waheedullah Rehmani, has blamed nepotism and preference to personal contacts in appointments here for the appalling state of affairs.
Locals are also discontent with the HPC blaming this public entity for wasting hefty funds, but doing nothing to promote peace.
Meanhile, Syed Ehsan Tahiri, spokesman for the HPC, acknowledged lack of comprehensive strategy in the capital and provinces has resulted in failure to facilitate return of rebels to normal life. He, however, said work is underway on a new compact policy in this regard.
It is important to note Taliban fighters were paid monthly salary of AFN 8000 while rebel commanders were promised AFN 13000 in Kunduz, but this process has been halted now.
