Fighting in Kunduz saw 670 Taliban killed

KUNDUZ CITY (SW): Authorities in northern Kunduz province revealed on Monday that some 670 Taliban militants have been killed there in the recent clashes.

Hamdullah Danishi, the Acting Governor told journalists that 22 security personnel and 70 civilian also lost lives in the fighting that broke when the rebels overrun the provincial capital of this strategically important province. He added that some 350 militants, 70 security personnel and 170 civilians also got wounded in the clashes.

The Kunduz City remained under the Taliban for at least three days before the government forces cleansed it of the rebels. Following the fall of Kunduz, the government vowed to swiftly retake it and investigate the causes of the fall.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has formed a committee that has been probing the circumstances that led to the fall. The Committee is jointly chaired by the former minister Farooque Wardag and Amrullah Saleh, the former chief of the spy agency NDS.

Yousuf Ayubi, Chief of the Kunduz Provincial Council has said accurate estimate of the losses inflicted by the fall are not know yet. He said the Council was busy estimating the losses.
